We flew into Frankfurt a couple of days ahead of the cruise. We found Frankfurt to be an interesting mixture of old and new. We arrived in the afternoon, checked in, and set out to explore. Lots of walking in the cool Fall air. We visited the very old part of town, across the foot bridges to the museum row on the other side of the Main river. And for dinner, we had our first Schnitzel of the trip. (meh) The next day had a bit of rain, but it didn’t deter us, nor the thousands of people running the Frankfurt Marathon. Who knew. (Well, I guess we would have if we'd checked before hand.) It created some obstacles, particularly when we took the City Tour bus - it was supposed to take 1 hour, but instead took 2 hours as it tried to get from one area of the city to the other. But it also added some excitement and entertainment to the day. The next day we would take the train to Nuremberg to board our ship.
The Hauptbahnhof train station where we arrived from the airport. A classic old (and very busy) train station.
Across from the train station. Our hotel was close by, down one of these streets.
Part of the old town. Quaint old-time wood buildings.
This was Frankfurt in a nutshell – both old and new buildings side-by-side.
Old Castle Tower with a brand new building in the background.
One of the pedestrian bridges with thousands of “love locks”
In the museum district, with some beautiful old classic homes.
Who can resist kicking up a pile of fallen leaves?
The museum district river-side walkway, with some very cool gnarly trees. Not sure what type they are, but the bark was peeling off like an arbutus tree.
This was pretty much what our second day was like – coming across blocked roads, and lots of runners. Good day for it though, just a bit of rain, and cool weather.
This was the 2nd group of drummers we came across, in support of the marathoners. We nicknamed them “Moms with Drums”. Both groups were mostly middle-aged women, and they were rockin’ it! You could hear them for blocks as they free-form drummed.
The European Central Bank building in the foreground, with the buildings of downtown Frankfurt in the background.
The Städel Museum, where we spent a few hours out of the rain.
Not exactly our cruise ship – but one very similar. We boarded ours in Nuremberg the next day.
