Panama Canal (Day 11) Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala

We hadn't planned ahead for this port of call. We had read that the most popular excursion was a visit to Antigua City, about an hour and a half drive from the port. Having just spent the last couple of days doing long drives, we weren't keen to do that a third time. We'd also heard that there can sometimes be traffic issues, so didn't want to take the risk. We went ashore to the area set up for cruise ships, which featured many artisan shops and a few bars and restaurants, and spent some time shopping and enjoying the musicians performing in the square. Ultimately a relaxing day, shopping and tuning in some wifi while we enjoyed a local beer.

This is the tourist area that has been setup for the cruise ships. The ships dock in an industrial area, so there isn't much to walk off and see without taking a cab into the small town, or an excursion farther afield.

A bit of local craftmanship (though it has seen better days).

One of the many artisan stands set up in the marketplace.

Some colourful handmade textiles.

And this is the painting we bought while we were there. We also picked up some beadwork Christmas ornaments, and a t-shirt that I'm wearing as I write this.
