Baltic Cruise (Day 4) Copenhagen - Embarkation

This was going to be our last day in Copenhagen that we could get out and about, but it was also embarkation day for our Baltic Cruise, so we only had the morning. We had wanted to go up the tower of the Christiansborg Palace - home of the Danish Parliament. The tower is free and offers good views of the city. We checked out, left our luggage, and made our way over to the Palace. We were almost first in line for the elevators up the tower, and it did provide a great opportunity for some panorama views of the city. Back to the hotel to pick up our luggage, a sloooow cab ride to the port, and we were finally onboard Norwegian Cruise Line's Breakaway. A big modern ship that would be our home for the next 9 nights as we made our way around the Baltic Sea. We were on our way!

The Christiansborg Palace, with it's tall tower - our objective for this last bit of Copenhagen.

Looking to the west, with the thin spires of the rides at Tivoli Gardens on the left, and the tall clock tower of the town hall on the right.

Looking to the east, with the island of Christianshavn on the other side of the water, the stock exchange building on the right, and our canal tour boat dock in the bottom left.

Looking sort of north-east, with the dome of Frederik's Church in the distance, and beyond that (in the far far distance) is our ship.

Heading back to the hotel, we passed this billboard, exemplifying the fun, friendly, carefree, happy-go-lucky Danes that we encountered in Copenhagen. (Kidding...but they don't seem to smile a whole lot either. At least not at tourists.)

Finally aboard NCL's Breakaway for our 9-night Baltic cruise.

Topside of the Breakaway with the pools and slides. (We tried neither on this trip.)

The Ocean Quay cruise port outside the city. There is another cruise port closer in, but our ship along with some other big ships, was at this one, about 15 minutes drive out.

A brave young woman (left) walks "the plank", hanging over the side of the ship about 18 decks above the water. We did not try this.

As we left the harbour we got a closer look at Copenhagen's new power plant that will turn trash into power (right side of photo). It will also feature a nearly 2,000-foot year-round ski slope and the world's tallest artificial climbing wall.
