Caribbean - NCL (Day 6) Cozumel, Mexico

Our last port of call on this cruise was Cozumel, Mexico. We have been here several times before, and this is one of two ports that we will be repeating across our three cruises. Our primary objective was to go to the big supermarket "Mega" for some cheap shopping. We also went a couple of blocks further to their competitor Chedraui, where we actually bought some stuff. It wasn't all about shopping though, after lunch onboard, we headed back ashore, and went in the "tourist" direction to the many, many shops and restaurants catering to the cruise business. This day, we were one of two ships at the downtown cruise port, and we counted five more ships at the out of town cruise port. That brings a lot of passengers into the town in one day. But there are also lots of shore excursions to entertain you.

Stepping off the cruise port, you pretty much have to go through the Punta Langosta (Lobster Point) shopping center. For the most part, the main tourist area of town is to the left out of Punta Langosta, but we headed to the right, which is more of the local's area.

This poor little VW beetle has seen better days. We also thought the Europea liquor store was a good place for a wide selection of spirits at good prices.

This was our objective this morning - the Soriana "MEGA" store. It's kind of a Mexican Walmart - with a wide variety of goods.

After we checked our MEGA, we wandered over to Chedraui, and came across what was left of their Christmas Night Market, with rides for the kids, and several food karts. It's probably a lot more fun in the evening - when it's actually open.

Well, isn't this a cute little ride for the kids? The painted characters would give the kids a good scare...and the condition of the ride would give the parents a good scare.

Looking to the left of the cruise pier, with the town of Cozumel stretching along the waterfront.

This was one of several sculptures we saw "sitting" around town, waiting for some company.

A horse drawn carriage along the seawall.

This capsized sail boat in the harbour looked like it had been there a very long time.

One of the sculptures along the seawall. This one depicting various forms of sea life, and a couple of scuba divers.

This large brass Swallows Sculpture "...depicts three giant flying swallows. The name Cozumel was derived from the Mayan "Cuzamil" or "Ah Cuzamil Peten", which means the island of swallows."

This brass bandito is waiting for someone to sit next to him (and rub the tarnish off).

Off the main street, heading toward the town square. More vendors and restaurants.

As we headed back to the ship, these Dia de Muertos characters welcomed you back.

Earlier in the morning we had seen this ship, the MSC Armonia, heading toward the out of town cruise port. This is the ship that we would be sailing on next for our second of the three cruises.

Our cabin steward was a master of towel folding, and by the end of the cruise, we had a menagerie of towel animals keeping us company.
