Danube River Cruise (Day 4) - Nuremberg, Germany (2nd Day)

Nuremberg Day 2. With Scenic° being an all-inclusive cruise line (the best way to go!), all we had to do was choose our excursion for the day. We opted for “WWII Sites”, having already experienced the other option "A Taste of Nuremberg" on our own the day before. The tour was very interesting, given that Hitler chose Nuremberg as his most “Perfect German City”, and used it as the location for rallies, parade grounds and the site of a huge Congress Hall that would seat 50,000 for his annual address.

After lunch onboard, we took the shuttle back into town, to the old castle and some areas of the old town that we hadn't seen the first day. All together, Nuremberg is a beautiful town with a lot of ancient and modern history. Back onboard for another awesome meal, we were invited up top for our passage through one of the locks. This was the first of some 16 locks that we would go through, and one of the highest.

The Imperial Castle of Nuremburg, up on the hill above the town.

St. Lorenz Church. Not really as old as it looks, being largely destroyed in the war, it has since been restored.

The back side of the large St. Lorenz Church.

The restoration work inside the church gives it a brighter look than you normally find in these old churches.

I guess you’re supposed to sit in a circle, and stare into the light?

Around (old) town – some beautiful buildings and sights along the river.

Houses built right alongside the Pegnitz River...

...and where need be - right over the river.

One of the old town’s plazas. It wasn't as busy today now that it wasn't a national holiday.

Floating up in our first lock. This was the biggest (deepest) we encountered.
