Caribbean-Cuba - MSC (Day 5) Cozumel, Mexico

This was our second time in Cozumel during this three-week trip. We were lucky to be docked at the in-town pier (instead of the out-of-town pier, several miles out), so it made for easy access in and out of town. First stop was to go back to the mega stores for some more deals, and to pick up some supplies for our third cruise. Once we took care of that, we came back for a quick lunch, and then headed out again. We wandered around for a while, stopped for some beer-fi at a place we had been to years before, then headed back to the ship. Doesn't sound very interesting, but we enjoyed the day, especially our relaxing couple of beers while we checked in online.

This replica of La Calavera Catrina would set the theme of the day. "La Calavera Catrina ('Dapper Skeleton', 'Elegant Skull') or Catrina La Calavera Garbancera is a 1910–1913 zinc etching by the Mexican printmaker, cartoon illustrator and lithographer José Guadalupe Posada. She is offered as a satirical portrait of those Mexican natives who, Posada felt, were aspiring to adopt European aristocratic traditions in the pre-revolution era. La Catrina has become an icon of the Mexican Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead".

Walking along the waterfront we came across this very upset horse. He was bucking like crazy. It took two handlers to calm him down while the passenger beat a hasty retreat. Don't know what set him off.

Another of the Calavera Catrina-like figures. This was a beautifully executed bronze statue outside a shop. It kind of put us in mind of Tim Burton's movie "The Nightmare Before Christmas".

This bar, with it's swings for chairs, sounded very lively. Long and narrow - they managed to get an entire Mariachi Band in there right next to the patrons.

This Calavera Catrina statue was enjoying an ice cream. Looks like she had been waiting a very long time for her true love.

The town square, at the far end of the town, away from the cruise port. It wasn't that far to walk, but with each block away from the cruise port the number of people dropped off.

A photo-op site that, despite there being no one in this picture, was enjoying a lot of action with people taking selfies.

This shopping area just off the town square featured some interesting local art on it's walls.

This painting was next to an escalator leading up to the entrance of the Synagogue.

Our last Catrina, waiting for the "Perfect Man". I guess that's why she's still waiting. Maybe she should lower her standards a bit.

We stopped at Casablanca Grill & Bar for some beer-fi. Cans of the local beer were very cheap. The food looked good too - but we didn't bother to order anything (we had a ship full of food to go back to). But we enjoyed our interlude, and the chance to get online.

Our ship waiting our return. Our next port would be what we were really looking forward to - Havana, Cuba.
